(NEW YORK) — Just three weeks after surpassing five million confirmed infections on August 9, the number of COVID-19 cases in the U.S. has now crossed the six million threshold.

According to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University, the number of reported COVID-19 cases as of early Monday afternoon numbered 6,006,327.  That’s over 2.1 million more cases than Brazil, which is second in the world in the total number of reported infections.

The U.S. now accounts for just under 24% of all of the COVID-19 infections on the planet and 22% of all deaths.

As of Monday afternoon, there were 183,258 reported COVID-19 deaths in the U.S., with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention forecasting between 196,000 and 207,000 deaths by the week ending September 19.
