(NEW YORK) — The first-approved COVID-19 disinfectant was approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on Monday.  The EPA states that a single application can protect against the virus.

The product from Allied BioScience, called SurfaceWise 2, is being used by American Airlines and other organizations within Texas.

EPA administrator Andrew Wheeler called the surface coating product “a major game-changing announcement for our efforts to combat coronavirus and COVID-19.”

A single application is believed to protect against the virus up to seven days, in between routine cleanings.  While Wheeler says SurfaceWise 2 is believed to deactivate the virus, he cautions that it should not replace frequent cleanings nor impede social distancing practices.

While the product is marked safe for use, the National Institutes of Health did highlight that the product uses quaternary ammonium as its main ingredient and says it could irritate or exacerbate asthmatic symptoms.

COVID-19 has infected over 5.7 million Americans and killed over 177,000, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
