(WASHINGTON, D.C.) — Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccine has been recommended for Americans over 18 years of age, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee determined via vote Sunday.

The board voted 12 in favor, one recusal and no opposition.

J&J received emergency use authorization from the Food and Drug administration Saturday and is now approved to be administered after gaining signature approval by CDC Director Rochelle Walensky.  

The company has since tested its vaccine, which touts an 85 percent efficacy against serious illness and is 100 percent effective against hospitalizations, was tested in areas where there are serious COVID-19 variants.

The vaccine, which was tested in Brazil and South Africa, worked against the mutated strands, says J&J.

As many as 3.9 million doses will be shipped out as early as Monday —  800,000 intended for pharmacies.

Shipments will grow weekly and, in tandem with vaccination efforts from Pfizer and Moderna — the goal is to have 130 million adults fully vaccinated by the end of March.

COVID-19 has infected over 28.6 million Americans and killed over 513,000 people in the U.S., reports Johns Hopkins University.
