vanescence is encouraging you to speak up for what’s right with the band’s new single, “Use My Voice.”
As frontwoman Amy Lee tells ABC Audio, “Use My Voice” has been a “really long time coming.” She first started writing it after reading the victim impact statement of Chanel Miller, who was sexually assaulted at Stanford University in 2015, and continued to work on the song over the years.
“More and more, over the course of the last couple years, our world’s just been going crazy,” Lee says. “I’ve seen things happen in this country that I didn’t think really could happen in this country. Just all along the way, another line would come to me.”
The overall message of “Use My Voice” is in its title — simply put, it’s about the power of using your voice.
“Anything you wanna throw at somebody, violence, whatever it is, there is still this incredible, more powerful than anything awesomeness of the simple, uncomplicated truth,” Lee says. “This is about using your voice, no matter who you are, no matter where you come from, no matter what’s happened to you or what you’ve done, your voice matters.”
Fittingly, “Use My Voice” features many other voices alongside Lee’s, including Halestorm‘s Lzzy Hale and The Pretty Reckless‘ Taylor Momsen.
“It feels really, really right to have the voices behind me and with me and beside me on that song that literally in life have supported me and I’ve supported them,” Lee shares. “We really are all in this together.”
Evanescence has also launched the Use My Voice voter registration campaign in partnership with the nonpartisan organization HeadCount.
“It’s not so much about the politics, it’s about empowering people,” Lee says of the initiative. “All of us, all people.”
