(NEW YORK) — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is now forecasting up to 205,000 U.S. COVID-19 deaths by September 12. The updated forecast was posted Friday.
The previous week’s forecast said up to 200,000 Americans total could die of the virus by Labor Day. The week before that, the prediction was for between 175,000 to 180,000 total U.S. deaths from COVID-19 by August 29.
As of Friday afternoon, the number of reported COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. stood at 174,442, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. At the current rate of about 1,000 deaths per day, the U.S. will exceeded 175,000 deaths by Saturday, August 22.
The number of reported COVID-19 cases in the U.S. as of Friday afternoon was 5,584,154, representing just over 24% of the world’s total infections.
